WES loves the Volland Store!
"We had the best time! On November 30, the 3rd and 4th graders from Alma Elementary School, plus their classroom teachers and their art teacher, Alicia Stott, visited the Volland gallery to see the artwork of Norman Akers and Isaiah Stewart. Mrs. Stott prepared them well. She had attended the artist talk when the exhibit opened and videotaped it to show to her 3rd grade students. She asked them to write down what they remembered from the talk and then read some of the responses on the day of the visit. “He began to make art when he was a little kid.” “The first time he saw art that wasn’t Indian art was when he went to college, and he liked the new art.”
Akers’ works (prints) include many of the same images, but in different combinations. Mrs. Stott asked each student to choose an image (symbol) and remember it when they returned to class. We suspect that a deer, a woodpecker, a water bottle, or a house will appear in future artwork of Mrs. Stott’s students.
The children clearly enjoyed looking at the art, talking about it with each other, seeing things that we adults don’t see. Thank you, Mrs. Stott, for bringing your students to Volland to see art. And thank you, Mrs. Emily Hess and Mrs. Jennifer Mumpower for bringing your 3rd graders, and Mrs. Emily Gehrt and Mrs. Cara Miller, for bringing your 4th graders– all who were very well-behaved, inquisitive, and engaged. We can't wait for your next visit!" ~Patty Reece
